Be Well: Healing Narratives in the Bible
Sundays at 12:15 PM via Zoom

For the first half of this 10-week series, join us for a five-week exploration of the topic of healing in the Old Testament, focusing on the gripping narratives of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. We will discuss the ancient Israelite concept of “shalom,” often translated as “peace,” which describes a holistic integration of the social, mental, biological and emotional senses of human “health” within a larger communal, economic, and environmental context. As we read the stories of the prophets Elijah and Elisha, we will encounter unhealthy individuals, communities, and situations, and we will witness the unexpected intervention of God’s healing power in their midst. We will reflect upon the connections between Jesus’ healing miracles and these prophetic stories, as well as the messages we might discern for our own day.

For the first half of this 10-week series, healing in the Old Testament:
  •  September 13: Healing and Sickness in the Old Testament: An Introduction
     (Exodus 15:26; Genesis 37:14; Exodus 20:11; Leviticus 25:1-7; Psalm 30)
  •  September 20: Elijah and God’s Holistic Healing: 1 Kings 17:1-24
  •  September 27: Individual and Communal Disease: 1 Kings 19:1-21 and 1 Kings 21:1-29
  •  October 4: Elijah’s Healing Miracles: 2 Kings 4:1-5:27
