The Future ChurchA Summer Sermon SeriesJune 24 – August 26
In her book, The Great Emergence, Phyllis Tickle reveals, “…about every five hundred years the Church feels compelled to hold a giant rummage sale…we are living in and through one of those five-hundred-year sales.”
Over and above all other things, these “five-hundred-year rummage sales” have resulted in the church showing the world how to split up. A few of its ruptures are well known by a place, like Chalcedon, where, in the fifth century, a council created language for the nature of Jesus and the Coptics broke away. Some are notorious by their theological arguments, like the Trinity-based filioque, which drummed out the East–West schism in the eleventh century. Others, like The Reformation, which plucked the Protestants from the Catholics in the sixteenth century, are best remembered by household names like Luther and Calvin.
What does our season of change have in store for the church universal? Will we see a church united for the way of Jesus or will we see another big schism? Will we see a church that looks outward in service to the community or a church that doubles down on its commitment to serve the consumer needs of its current constituency? What kind of change is coming?
This summer we will be joined by preaching voices that will offer their perspective on this question. Some of these voices are from the Kirk’s present—our current pastors and incoming pastoral resident. Some are from the Kirk’s past—pastors that served here before. Some are on the front lines of the church’s future—folks that are ministering in new and creative ways outside the walls of the traditional church.
I hope you will join us on Sunday mornings! If you have a deeper interest in this conversation, consider joining one of our missional reading groups in July and August. We will be engaging Michael Frost’s accessible book, Surprise the World.
