Frequently Asked Questions
What types of services do you offer?
The sanctuary service is held every Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. (first Sunday after Labor Day through mid-June) and at 11:00 a.m. year-round. You’re invited to a coffee hour between the two services (held outdoors on
the front patio during the summer months, and in Heritage Hall directly below the sanctuary from mid-September through mid-June), sponsored by the Board of Deacons. You’ll meet the pastors and chat with Kirk members over coffee and snacks. Visit the information tables to learn more about the Kirk’s ministries, mission projects, youth and family programs, events, concerts and more! Parking for the sanctuary is at the east end of the campus.
If you've never attended our sanctuary service, click here to learn more about our Order of Worship. The service is enhanced by the Chancel Choir, which is comprised of both professional and volunteer musicians. |
The 9:00 a.m. sanctuary service is a family service; a bit more relaxed, with a children's message early in the service before the children leave for special activities, followed by Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. for all ages (adults and children). The 11:00 a.m. sanctuary service is traditional; formal, reverent worship and music, continuing our 60+ years' tradition.
Nursery care is available throughout the morning (8:45 a.m. until noon) for infants and toddlers, birth through 4 years.
The Cedarholm Chapel communion service is held the first Sunday of
each month at 8:00 a.m. This is a short, welcoming worship service with communion, hymns and a brief meditation. The Cedarholm Chapel is located in the Kirk House at the center of the campus.
The summer garden service is held on Sunday
mornings at 9:15 a.m. in the Columbarium garden from mid-June through Labor Day. This 45-minute family service, followed by fellowship and refreshments
under the umbrellas on the front patio, allows young and
old to worship outdoors in the beauty of our gardens
during our glorious Michigan summers. (In case of rain,
the service will be moved to the sanctuary).
Special services are held throughout the year on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
Where is the best place to park?
If you plan to attend the sanctuary service at either 9:00 or 11:00 a.m., please park at the east end of the campus adjacent to the sanctuary.
We also have a diagonal row of parking spaces reserved for families with small children (look for these signs) at the southwest corner of the campus, closest to both the Nursery/Toddler entrance and the Sunday School entrance. Those with small children may find it easier to park in one of the diagonal spaces or in the west parking lot to drop off children
in the nursery before heading to one of the services. For a campus map, click here.
What about accessibility and other assistance?
All of our service and event locations (sanctuary, refectory, Cedarholm and Melrose Chapel) are wheelchair accessible. Assistance from our ushers and greeters is also available for anyone who needs an extra hand. In addition, on most Sundays from spring through autumn, we offer a Courtesy Cart to trans-port you from your car to the front steps of the sanctuary. Look for the Courtesy Cart in the northeast parking lot.
How do I check in my children for Sunday School?
Where are their classrooms?
The Kirk has installed an electronic check-in system
for infants/toddlers, children and youth. Several touch-screen computers are available at various locations in the Abbey
(both 1st and 2nd floors) as well as near the sanctuary. Each child will be issued a nametag (listing important allergy infor-mation, if applicable). Volunteers are available to assist parents with the check-in system.
Sunday School classes are available:
10:00 a.m. - Preschool through 12th grade
NOTE: Children generally attend the 9:00 a.m. family service and sit with their parents until the Word With the Children; then ages 4 through grade 2 leave for Abbey 13 for a time of playing and learning together. At 10:00 a.m., their teachers escort them to their Sunday School classrooms.

How should I dress?
We want you to feel comfortable when you visit the Kirk. You will find a mix of styles, from casual, to business casual, to suit and tie. You’ll find the dress for our Summer Garden service to be suitable for sitting on folding chairs and even picnic blankets on the grass!
How is Communion celebrated? Should I take part in Communion if I am not a member of the Kirk?
In the Presbyterian Church, the sacrament that Christ instituted for the remembrance of him takes the form of a simple meal – a sharing of bread and wine (unfermented). Anyone who loves Jesus is welcome to share in the Communion service, even if you are not a member of the Kirk. In the sanctuary service, trays containing the bread and wine are passed down each row while the congregation remains seated.
